What Is Medical Acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles at specific points on the body to stimulate the nervous system, reduce inflammation, and promote the body's natural healing processes. It has been practiced for thousands of years and is now supported by a growing body of clinical research.
At Dunn Family Medicine, acupuncture is practiced as medical acupuncture — meaning it's performed by physicians who integrate it with their broader clinical knowledge. This isn't a standalone treatment in a separate office; it's part of your overall care plan, considered alongside your other health needs and treatments.
This integrated approach is one of the things that makes our practice different. Patients in Steilacoom, Lakewood, and the surrounding communities don't have to choose between conventional medicine and complementary approaches — they get both, from the same doctor who knows their full history.
Acupuncture is included in DPC membership. It's also available to non-members as a standalone service.

What to Expect at Your Acupuncture Visit
Intake and assessment
Your physician will review your symptoms, health history, and goals. Acupuncture is always considered in the context of your overall health — not in isolation.
The treatment
Very fine, sterile needles are placed at specific points. Most patients feel minimal discomfort — often a mild sensation of pressure or warmth. Sessions typically last 20–40 minutes.
Follow-up and integration
We track your response and adjust the approach over time. Acupuncture often works best as a series of treatments, and we'll discuss what makes sense for your situation.
Included in DPC Membership
